چکیده

2014 There has been, in recent years, a great interest in twisted orientation patterns in static samples of nematic liquid crystals (NLC). Here we investigate the behaviour of such structures when the limiting surfaces induce not planar alignment but homogeneously tilted alignment. It is shown that when the overall twist is equal to 03A0, there exists a critical value of the tilt angle at the surface where the expected twisted structure spontaneously transforms into a non-twisted orientation pattern. This transformation presents all the features of a phase transition, which can be either of first or of second order depending on the set of elastic constants of the material. Experimental confirmation has been obtained with MBBA. LE JOURNAL DE PHYSIQUE TOME 39, FÉVRIER 1978, Classification Physics Abstracts 61.30 46.30

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

Dispersion of Nanoparticles in Liquid Crystals by Sputtering and Its Effect on the Electrooptic Properties

The authors describe a method to produce gold nanoparticle-dispersed liquid crystals by means of sputtering, and discuss how the presence of gold nanoparticles affect the electro-optic response of the host liquid crystal. The method exploits the fact that liquid crystals possess low vapor pressures which allow them to undergo the sputtering process, and the target material is sputtered directly...

Domain walls and anchoring transitions mimicking nematic biaxiality in the oxadiazole bent-core liquid crystal C7.

We investigate the origin of "secondary disclinations" that were recently described as new evidence of a biaxial nematic phase in an oxadiazole bent-core thermotropic liquid crystal C7. Using an assortment of optical techniques such as polarizing optical microscopy, LC PolScope, and fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy, we demonstrate that the secondary disclinations represent non-singul...

Coexisting nematic and smectic-A phases in a twisted liquid-crystal cell.

Twisted homogeneously planar-aligned nematic liquid-crystal cells are cooled into the smectic- A phase. The expected defective structure does not form. Instead the cells still show good optical-guiding characteristics. Exploration of the cells using a half-leaky guided-mode arrangement reveals that the liquid-crystal phase separates into three or more regions. Adjacent to both the upper and low...

On the Electric Field Induced Stripe Instability Threshold of Twisted Nematic Layers

Most liquid crystal displays make use of the elect roopt ic properties of twisted nematic layers. Both the s tandard twisted nematic displays of 90° twist [1] as well as the recently developed 'supertwist ' displays of more than 180° twist [2] require director fields which depend only on one spatial coordinate, the coordinate z parallel to the layer normal. Director fields which depend on more ...
